#29 Type of firearm
Posted: 30 Apr 10 11:15 AM
Should a derringer be listed as a pistol? I need to see what ATF says but when we listed it as a derringer it would not print a multiple. Anybody know the correct way? Is this what is causing the multiple not to print?

The CFR defines a handgun as
"(A) a firearm which has a short stock and is designed to be held and fired by the use of a single hand; and (B) any combination of parts from which a firearm described in subparagraph (A) can be assembled."
Instructions for question 29 on the Form 4473 list the possible types:
"Types of firearms include: pistol, revolver, rifle, shotgun, receiver, frame, and other firearms that are not either handguns or long guns (rifles or shotguns), such as firearms having a pistol grip that expel a shotgun shell or "National Firearms Act (NFA) firearms."
I'm not a lawyer - just a fellow FFL holder - but I'd call a derringer's type a pistol without question.
